Plastic has become an essential part of human life today. Its versatility allows us to live easier and more hygienic lives. Plastics are used in almost everything, ranging from household products such as toothbrushes, stationery, paper cups and drinking bottles to medical devices, including syringes, saline bags and medical gloves. Plastics can be seen everywhere from the moment we wake up until the moment that we switch off the light and go to bed at night. However, over the last decade, the world’s population has increased dramatically and this has resulted in an enormous quantity of plastics waste, with the majority having to go into landfills to remain there forever.

Biodegradation is one of the processes that reduce the amount of waste. It is part of the natural cycle that returns the carbon in garbage to nature. Though apple peel and banana skin usually biodegrades in a matter of few months, plastics take hundreds of years to naturally biodegrade.

BioPBS is revolutionary in its two-fold bio properties: it is both bio-based and 100% biodegradable, using advanced technology from the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.  Derived from natural sources, such as sugarcane, BioPBS is compostable into biomass, carbon dioxide and water. PBS from MCC technology has been certified by the Biodegradable Product Institute for ASTM D6400 in North America, by Vinçotte for OK Compost (EN13432) and OK Compost Home marks in the European Union, and by the Japan Bioplastics Association for GreenPla Mark in Japan. Products made from BioPBS can be disposed of along with organic waste. It is naturally compostable, without requiring a specialized composting facility, and has no adverse effect on the environment. So, BioPBS is the truly environmentally-friendly plastic for green products.

BioPBS can be applied in many forms of consumer products, i.e., plastic shopping bags, utensils, laminated paper cups, flexible packaging, etc. PBS from MCC technology can be safely used in contact with food and has been included in the positive list of the Japan Hygienic Olefin and Styrene Plastics Association (JHOSPA), and has complied with the European Union Regulation EU10/2011 for the overall migration test at 100°C for 4 hours (OM6).
